5 Signs Your Immune System Isn't Supporting You Well
An immune system working optimally protects you from infection and other dangers. Organs, tissues, and cells work together to protect you from bacteria, viruses, and other potentially harmful substances. Your immune system also plays a key role in healing.
Below, Dr. Jake Schmutz and his team at Integrative Medica in Salt Lake City, Utah, examine signs that your immune system may not be performing at peak levels, and when to consider a medical assessment.
1. Changes in your bathroom experience
Most people have a pretty well-established routine when it comes to bathroom functions. Changes in your bathroom visits could indicate an immune system problem.
Don’t ignore diarrhea that lasts for more than a few days and doesn’t have a clear cause. Left untreated, diarrhea can leave you dangerously dehydrated.
Constipation is also a problem. If you’re unable to empty your bowels, or if your bowel movements are firm or look like small pellets, your immune system could be triggering a digestive system slowdown.
2. Ongoing fatigue
Fatigue is a leading symptom of immune system malfunction. You might find yourself feeling intensely tired or drained of energy. Many people liken this feeling to what happens when they have the flu or COVID-19. Sleep often does little to help you feel refreshed and restored.
Fatigue is sometimes accompanied by joint or muscle aches. Note that fatigue is also linked to other health conditions. Don’t ignore the messages your body sends, and seek medical help for ongoing or severe fatigue.
3. Unexplained weight shifts
If your immune system is struggling, you might notice changes in your weight. Some people experience weight gain, while others have a hard time keeping weight on, dropping pounds without trying.
Take both symptoms seriously. Like fatigue, weight changes can signal a variety of health problems. Coming in for a diagnostic work-up is the only way to determine a clear cause.
4. Ongoing or repeat infections
Your immune system works hard to prevent infection and fight off those that can’t be prevented. If you experience ongoing infections, such as wounds that won’t heal, or treat multiple infections in the same year, it may be a sign that your immune system is faltering.
Infections take a toll on your body, and in some cases, they can spread and cause serious health risks. If you feel like you’re dealing with more infections than normal, it might be time to seek professional help.
5. New sensitivity to the sun
Too much time in the sun has consequences for everyone. But if your body reacts to sun exposure with a rash, blisters, or scaly patches, it could indicate an immune system issue.
Some people feel differently when exposed to sunlight. You might experience nausea, headaches, or even chills when you spend time outdoors. These symptoms can be signs of an autoimmune disorder.
What to do if you notice these signs
Too many people ignore changes in how they feel and function on a daily basis. Some are distracted by their daily task loads. Others hope their problems go away over time.
Listening to your body is one of the best ways to preserve your health and wellness. If you sense that something is out of the norm for you, or feel troubled by changes that have no clear explanation, we’re here to help.
